Ryker’s Story

Ryker was my soul dog. I was 19 years old when I found a listing for German Shepherd puppies on Craigslist. I knew nothing about owning a German Shepherd, but I knew I needed him. Through my highest of highs and my lowest of lows, he was by my side and got me through it all.

He was a gentle soul who radiated sunshine and made everyone laugh with his quirkiness. Having your first dog on your own teaches you so much, especially how to navigate life’s challenges as they come, and Ryker and I learned together. He and his cat brother, Raiden, had the classic relationship you would expect from dog and cat siblings. Ryker was a true guardian to his family, always in the gentlest way.

That guardian role became even stronger when my son, Liam, was born. Ryker never left Liam’s side from the moment they met until their last day together. Watching them play, and seeing Ryker’s endless patience with a toddler, filled me with pride. I will cherish those memories forever.

We miss him so much, and there is a deafening silence in our home as we try to navigate everyday life without him. Thank you, Ryker, for loving me your entire life. I hope you are happy and healthy, with endless Chuckit balls and all the running you desire.

It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.

Thank you to the professionals who supported Ryker’s care and our family

When we received the news of Ryker’s aggressive cancer, we faced the hardest decision a family can face: whether to say goodbye at the hospital or at home. We chose home, so he could spend his last day in familiar surroundings with the people who loved him most. Ryker’s vet recommended Journeys Home, and from the beginning we were treated with kindness and compassion. Their veterinarian was professional and gentle with our family, and especially with Ryker, and made the final act of love as peaceful and dignified as possible for him. We are truly grateful for their support.
